Time To Disqus Comments On Multiple Social Media Account Management And The Woes Of Open Authorization Amidst The Social Web

Written by  Fidel Gonzales
Actively managing multiple social media accounts for my own personal business efforts as well as managing multiple social media identities for a handful of clients, the biggest issues that have arisen are not with updating these accounts, as there are an array of desktop software applications such as EchoFon (EchoFon For Twitter Mozilla Firefox Addon), TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop, but instead with the numerous open authorization (OAuth) conflicts between one site and another that I frequently encounter. It has proven a complete mess of my daily operations.

While OAuth is a extraordinary idea, the open protocol to allow secure API authorization amongst desktop and web applications does not appear to be completely stable upon certain platforms. I doubt the issue resides entirely with OAuth itself but more likely with its implementation upon such social media channels. Beyond what I preceive the most aggrevating and highly related Google nightmare concerning Google email account authorization and YouTube, I have also had ongoing issues with the Disqus social commenting system.

DISQUS OAUTH AUTHENTICATION ISSUES

To set the record straight, Disqus is highly proactive in addressing quality control issues and has repeatedly addressed my nonchalant praises and technical issues I have shared upon Twitter. In doing so, the latest issue, which has lingered for just over a month, was immediately addresses upon posting the issue upon Twitter. Yet, it is still unresolved. I have no complaints thus far, as I am grateful that they have such a service, but in my quest to contribute my share in quality control and hopefully improve the system, I have contacted them once again with the ongoing issue and share it here to illustrate some of the issues concerning social media and open authorization.

Giannii,

I am still unable to login to my @DIRTFORGE Twitter account when attempting to comment using the Twitter authorization icon. This is even though I am currently logged into Disqus and Twitter with my @DIRTFORGE Twitter account. Instead, I am reverted to a client Disqus or Twitter account (via Disqus) @(CLIENT), which I hadn't logged into for months.  After authorization, I am still logged into @DIRTFORGE Twitter but am inadvertently logged out of @DIRTFORGE Disqus and logged into @(CLIENT) Disqus.

But, when I log in to comment using the Disqus comment icon, I am loggged into my @DIRTFORGE Disqus account. There is a conflict somewhere regarding the Disqus side of Twitter. To add to that, when attempting to modify my @DIRTFORGE Disqus Account Connections, where I seek to "enable special options and share your web activity by connecting your services," I have long been unable to connect and receive an error indicating I am unable to connect. Incidentally, after multiple attempts within the last 30 minutes and many previous attempts in months past, I was apparently able to connect. Yet, still, when attempting to login to my @DIRTFORGE Disqus account to comment upon a page, I am logged out of my own @DIRTFORGE Disqus account and logged into my client's Disqus.

What makes this more interesting is when after repeatedly performing tests to this end, after I am on a website page where I seek to comment as @DIRTFORGE Twitter by clicking on the Twitter icon and am inadvertantly logged into my @(CLIENT) Disqus account, I then go to refresh my Disqus account connections page, where I was logged into as @DIRTFORGE, the page remains the same, saying I am connected to other sites as @DIRTFORGE but yet the top of the page where my account overview is located, as seen in the attached screen shot, I am logged into as @(CLIENT).

It is my hope that by providing such redundant detail you can fully understand the dynamics of the issue. I look forward to your assistance with the aggravating issue and fully appreciate your assistance thus far.

Thank you.
